Engaging Under-represented Women's Voices
The Coalition of Child Care Advocates is being funded by the Government of Canada (Women and Gender Equality Canada) to implement a 21-month systemic change project (ending March 31, 2026) to advance the $10Day child care system across BC by centering the voices of under-represented women.
Project Overview
The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC (CCCABC) is an inclusive, feminist, membership-based organization comprised of individuals and groups including parents, grandparents, early childhood educators, child care providers, community organizations, academics and unions. The CCCABC works collectively, using research, public education and mobilization, to achieve the vision of a high-quality, affordable, accessible child care system that serves the public interest - the broadly-supported $10aDay Plan, developed by CCCABC and the Early Childhood Educators of BC.
We respectfully acknowledge that our work is led from the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We are pleased to share that we received federal funding from Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) Canada for a 21-month systemic change project to advance the $10Day child care system across BC by centering the voices of under-represented women including Indigenous, Black, racialized, immigrant and refugee women living in rural, remote and/or Northern communities.
This funding enables us to scale up our efforts to identify local child care needs and priorities and co-create advocacy solutions that reflect the needs of each community. It builds on $10aDay progress to date - reduced parent fees, more child care spaces and increased support for early childhood educators in BC. And, it recognizes that much more work is required to achieve our overall goal of a $10aDay Child Care system in BC in which all BC women, children and families have access to high quality, inclusive, flexible child care with fees capped at $10aDay and all educators and other staff have fair, equitable compensation and healthy working conditions – all within a system that upholds Indigenous rights and advances reconciliation.
This project also supports new leadership opportunities in our organization and the broader child care sector - prioritizing women in northern and rural communities, women living on low-incomes, with disabilities, Black and racialized women and refugees, newcomers and immigrant women.
We are so pleased to welcome Sherlana to our team, leading our engagement in northern and rural communities from beautiful Chetwynd, BC. Sherlana is a parent, an Early Childhood Educator, and a deeply connected and committed community member.
Specifically, in this project we are ‘scaling up’ engagement models and policy co-development approaches through a range of integrated activities, including:
- Visiting northern and rural communities to engage in dialogue and build relationships
- Networking with advocates across BC to inform and advance systemic advocacy
- Hosting Child Care Dialogues on key issues to co-develop policy recommendations
- Supporting emerging advocates in new leadership roles in our organization and movement.
With this integrated approach, we will also ‘scale up’ the capacity of diverse women’s voices from across BC to shape the future of $10aDay child care advocacy at the community and provincial levels.
