Territorial Acknowledgement
We acknowledge with deep respect and gratitude that the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC carries out its work on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of First Nations across what is now known as British Columbia.
Our work originates on the lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We recognize and honour the distinct identities, histories, and continuing contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples in BC. We are deeply grateful for their enduring presence, knowledge, and leadership, which continue to shape this land and all who live here.
As an organization with an ongoing commitment to equity, reconciliation, and justice, we understand that land acknowledgements must be accompanied by meaningful action. We therefore commit to:
- Listening to and learning from Indigenous communities by integrating those teachings into our advocacy efforts and organizational culture.
- Building respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous colleagues through listening, collaboration and amplifying their voices.
- Upholding Indigenous rights and sovereignty by supporting the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
- Supporting Indigenous leadership within the child care sector and our organization.
- Learning how to embed Indigenous perspectives in all our work.
This acknowledgement is not a conclusion, but a living commitment — one that guides how we show up, how we make decisions, and how we hold ourselves accountable. We recognize that reconciliation is not a destination but a process of continuous learning, reflection, and action.
We believe that the care of children is a transformative force at the heart of social change. By centering respect for young children, families, and those who care for them, we can help to dismantle systemic barriers and co-create a more equitable, compassionate, and sustainable world for all peoples.
