Engaging Underrepresented Women's Voices
The Coalition of Child Care Advocates has received funding from the Government of Canada (Women and Gender Equality Canada) to extend its systemic change project to March 31, 2027. The project prioritizes centering the voices of underrepresented women in our work to advance the equitable expansion of the $10Day child care system across BC.
Engaging Underrepresented Women’s Voices to Scale Up $10aDay Child Care in B.C.
Overview of 2026/27 Project Extension
The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC (CCCABC) is an inclusive, feminist, membership-based organization comprised of individuals and groups including parents, grandparents, early childhood educators, child care providers, community organizations, academics and unions. The CCCABC works collectively, using research, public education and mobilization, to achieve the vision of a high-quality, affordable, accessible child care system that serves the public interest - the broadly-supported $10aDay Plan, developed by CCCABC and the Early Childhood Educators of BC.
We acknowledge with respect and gratitude that our work is led from the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We are pleased to share that we have received federal funding from Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) Canada to extend our systemic change project. This project seeks to advance the $10aDay child care system across BC by centering the voices of underrepresented women including Indigenous, Black, racialized, immigrant and refugee women living in rural, remote and/or Northern communities.
This funding extension to March 31, 2027 supports our response to two significant recent legislative and policy changes that we and our supporters advocated for:
- Amendments to BC's School Act now allow school districts to provide year-round child care on school grounds for children 0-12 years.
- The Province has paused further expansion of the "test" Child Care Operating Funding Model and launched a consultation process as part of its broader child care modernization plan.
Our response prioritizes the following three activities:
- Provincial $10aDay Child Care Webinars - we will plan, host and follow-up on 3 provincial webinars to advance our key advocacy priorities for BC Budget 2027.
- Supporting Families, Educators and Operators to Engage with local School Districts Across the Province – With a focus on our Technical Recommendations for Child Care Expansion, which highlight the role of school districts, we will develop and implement an Outreach Plan to build capacity province-wide for families, educators and operators to connect with their local school boards/trustees and share their child care needs, perspectives and stories.
- Advancing Effective Provincial Child Care Policies and Funding in the New Context - share and engage with the provincial government regarding our Technical Recommendations for Expansion and the development and prompt implementation of a new Unified Child Care Operating Funding Model. We will spotlight the social and economic benefits of effective public investment in a universal child care system.
